Plummer's Arctic Lodges & Outposts: Team HellerHighWater and BBZ Are A Go For 2023!

Truly Legendary Fishing

Welcome to Plummer's Arctic Lodges. If you are looking for the best place for lake trout fishing, look no further. Plummer's Arctic Lodges have been offering the best lake trout fishing for over sixty years on Great Bear Lake and Great Slave Lake. We offer lake trout fishing trips that no other fishing lodge can match. From the pristine waters of Great Bear Lake Lodge, with no other boats for over 150 miles, to the non-stop trophy lake trout fishing within sight of the lodge on Great Slave Lake, there is no way to fairly compare us to any other operator.

There is a reason why we are the longest running fishing operation in the North, and there is a reason why we hold all the World Records for Lake Trout, Arctic Char, and Arctic Grayling. If you haven't already been to one of our lodges, chances are you know someone who has. Don't put off the trip of a lifetime.

Nearly 80 Years of History

About Plummer's Arctic Lodges

The Arctic has a rich history yet a relatively recent one. When you consider that mankind was only beginning to understand how little we do indeed understand about the Arctic in the 1930’s and you consider at the same time that the Plummer’s were exploring this part of the world in the late thirties it can be said with certainty that there is no one on the planet today that has explored more of this enchanting part of the world. While the north maintains its hold on remaining remote, for over 50 years Plummer’s has made it accessible in modern terms, defying what Mother Nature as laid in the path from the end of the road in Yellowknife to the Arctic coast.

The location of our Great Slave Lake Lodge was discovered by Warren Plummer and his father by canoe in 1938 but with the Plummer’s being pioneers in aviation it was not long before airplanes on floats and skis were being used by the family to explore beyond the frontier. As many of you reading this are aware, you do not have to spend long in a cove or among islands on Great Bear Lake casting from the float of an airplane to determine that you are on the best lake trout fishery in the world. This is where the Plummer’s decided the next lodge was to be built. We now operate three lodges on Great Bear Lake where the largest lake trout in the world have been caught since records were being kept. It is noteworthy that even in these modern times, a lake that is the size of England, that is only ice free for about 90 days a year has only Plummer’s operating fishing lodges on her shores. With that kind of limited access and the conservation policies of Plummer’s it is no wonder it remains the outstanding fishery it was over 60 years ago when the Plummer family began to explore it.

While fishing is still the biggest draw to the north in the summer time, you can’t spend a lifetime in the Arctic without getting into a few other adventurous outlets. Plummer’s can take you on many adventures in the Arctic including hunting for exotic big game like Musk Ox, floating the Coppermine River in rafts, canoeing endless rivers in the Great Bear Lake and Great Slave Lake watershed’s and kayaking the fresh water ocean we call Great Bear Lake amongst the shelter of the islands of the McTavish Arm from the old frontier outpost of Cameron Bay through the archipelago past the 1930’s mine site at Port Radium to our Arctic Circle Lodge. Wildlife opportunities are with you every moment you spend in the remote north but we can also organize targeted wildlife tours so that you get that footage you have been dreaming of, including caribou migration, Musk Ox herds, Grizzly Bears, plenty of raptors, wolves and many other species.

How The Bucket List Trip Of A Lifetime Began…

Bill Siemantel (Team BBZ) and Tim Tuttle (Team HellerHighWater)

The Beginning For Team BBZ

I have to give 100 percent credit to my best friend and fishing partner Tim Tuttle for memories that will last a lifetime. Back in 2015 as Tim and I where fishing Castaic Lake, he looked at me and asked if I had ever fished Plummer’s Lodges? My response was no, but it was on my bucket list to dos. With being a full time firefighter and just having to much stuff on my plate to even make time for a trip like that, I thought it was just a pipe dream of an adventure that someday I hope to make,

After a month or so Tim and I where fishing again, because fishing is our life, LOL. As it was getting close to my birthday in April, Tim looked at me and said you better takes these days off work in July. I asked why and he said we are going to Plummer’s and to a special location called the Arctic Circle Outpost, a place that Tim, his brother Terry and Dad started fishing many years ago. To say the Tuttle family is OG with Plummer’s is an understatement!

The Stage Was Set

Well there was no backing out now and the stories from the past that Tim was telling me kept me up most nights dreaming of monster Lake Trout and Northern Pike as long as my leg. I got the time off from the fire department and worked a few extra shifts to cover the entire trip. I was surprised that a trip of this caliber, a location so remote, and a lodge that lets you self guide….WHAT? Yes, the Arctic Circle Lodge Outpost lets you self guide. This means if are avid anglers and a true knowledgeable boaters with safety on the mind, you can fish from sunup to sundown! That’s about 20 hours of fishing per day for almost 7 days straight, if you can handle it! So you take that and divide it by seven days, in a location very few anglers will ever fish, and a solid chance to catch a lake trout from 10 to 50 pounds….The the overall cost of a trip like this is a Steal!

But, if you want the Red Carpet treatment with knowledgeable guides, breathtaking sceneries, simple travel arrangements to and from, incredible shoreline lunches, time to just relax and take it all in, then Plummer’s has many locations to fit anyone’s needs.

The Team Was Picked

The key to a successful and stress free trip of a lifetime is to get a group of anglers of like minds. Meaning birds of a feather flock together. If you have anglers that just want to experience the location with fishing for a few hours, taking a break and having a shore lunch, catching 30 lake trout before heading in for dinner at the lodge and then sitting back with great friends and building lifelong memories, then any one of the Plummer’s Lodges locations are a perfect fit.

But if you are hard core like Team BBZ and HellerHighWater and looking for that magical 30 to 50 pound lake trout and do not mind missing a shore lunch or even dinner while a handful of PB&J’s will do, you better put your name on the list for the Arctic Circle Outpost. 8 anglers and 4 boats are a perfect number for both traveling to and from Plummer’s and fishing the lodge, it will handle up to 12 anglers nicely.

The Trips ContinuedUntil

Once you experience Plummer’s Lodges, it captures your soul and you do everything you can to make it backup to the great NWT. Our group of anglers have been able to make a total of 3 trips back to Plummer’s with each year creating lifelong memories and sore arms by the end of the week catching more lake trout and northern pike than one person can count. Unfortunately when Covid hit and Canada closing down their borders, our team could not make it back to Great Bear Lake for a couple of years. Thankfully we are back and ready to once again make this trip with great friends to a destination where dreams become reality. Get ready Plummer’s Lodges and Great Bear Lake, we will be there soon for 2023!

How To Plan Your Trip to Plummer's Arctic Lodges

There Still Spots Available, So Tell Them Team BBZ Or Team HellerHighWater Sent You

Great Bear Lake Lodge, Trophy Lodge

Getting to our lodges on Great Bear Lake is very straight forward, and we are here to help make sure your travel goes smoothly. Guests going to Great Bear Lake Lodge or Arctic Circle Outpost will depart Yellowknife on a Saturday morning, and will return to Yellowknife the following Saturday around mid-afternoon. Guests going to Trophy Lodge will depart Yellowknife on Sunday morning, and will return to Yellowknife the following Sunday around mid-afternoon. Special arrangements can be made by emailing or calling the office and usually involve an additional air charter cost. You will need to travel from your home to Yellowknife to begin the trip. For most, this can be done in a single day of travel. For those living outside North America, or those wishing to have more leisurely travel days, two days may be necessary. Several major airlines fly into Yellowknife from Calgary, Alberta and Edmonton, Alberta. Please accept our assistance in planning the trip to Yellowknife.

Once you arrive in Yellowknife, you will be met at the airport by one of our staff. We will ensure that you get to your hotel and outline for you how the morning departure for Great Bear Lake will go.

On departure morning, a shuttle will take you from the hotel to the charter terminal for your flight to Great Bear Lake Lodge, Arctic Circle Outpost or Trophy Lodge. These charters typically depart Yellowknife mid-morning, arriving at the lodges around lunch time. Guests for Arctic Circle will go to Great Bear Lake Lodge, be served lunch and then board a float plane for Arctic Circle. Guests for Trophy Lodge will go directly from Yellowknife to Trophy Lodge.

There are no flights arriving early enough from down south that will connect with our morning charters, so you must arrive in Yellowknife on the day/night before.

Tree River Lodge

Getting to Tree River Lodge can be done most easily via the main lodge on Great Bear Lake. Over 90% of the guests that visit Tree River Lodge do so as a side trip for a night or two from Great Bear Lake Lodge. When visiting the Tree River this way, the trip begins at the lodge on Great Bear Lake one morning during your week stay. After breakfast and a good weather report we fly groups of guests to Tree River to fish for Arctic Char, experience the Arctic coast, and spend a night or two where few ever have.

Great Slave Lake Lodge

Great Slave Lake Lodge can be visited for 3 days, 4 days or 7 days. All the trips begin in Yellowknife; you need to arrive in Yellowknife the day before your trip to coordinate with our early-morning charters into the lodge. Both the 7 day and 4 day trips begin on Monday. Your charter will depart from Yellowknife around 6:30 am and arrive a half an hour later for breakfast at the lodge and a full day of fishing. Those staying for 4 days will fly back to Yellowknife early Friday morning. If all you have time for is the 3 day trip weekend trip, it starts early Friday morning and you are flown back to Yellowknife early Monday morning. You should be able to leave Yellowknife the day you leave the lodge, as you will be back in town mid morning.

No matter which lodge you decide to visit, we will assist you with making the most sensible travel arrangements and hotel bookings. We have staff in Yellowknife to help you plan the time you have in Yellowknife so you can take in local attractions, and they will also make sure you get to where you need to be when you need to be there.

Getting Home

Your journey home after your Arctic adventure begins with a departure from Great Bear Lake late Saturday morning. Guests at Arctic Circle Lodge will fly to Great Bear Lake Lodge Friday night and overnight there for the charter in the morning. You will arrive in Yellowknife on the charter and be met by our staff to ensure you and your luggage make it safely to your hotel. Due to unforeseen yet somewhat normal delays associated with flying in the far north, we strongly recommend that you do not schedule your flights home from Yellowknife on the Saturday night but rather relax and enjoy Yellowknife for the night and begin your journey home on Sunday morning. We are not responsible for delays that may occur to the third party charters that bring our guests to and from Yellowknife. Rest easy knowing you followed our advice and booked your journey home on Sunday.
