Hanna Robbins of Virginia took her husband, Bassmaster Senior Writer Pete Robbins, to Anglers Inn’s property at famous Lake El Salto in Mexico for his 40th birthday in 2009. She intended it to be a “once in a lifetime trip,” but nearly 20 visits later it has become their go-to vacation spot. The couple has built upon that substantial experience to put together the “Ultimate Guide to El Salto and Picachos,” aimed at helping fellow travelers maximize their trip to the world-class bass fisheries, whether it’s their first time or they’ve been there before.

The guide is available for free at their website: https://www.halfpastfirstcast.com/el-salto-and-picachos

“Anglers Inn does such an incredible job of making everyone feel welcome and appreciated,” Hanna said. “You could go there sight unseen and have a great vacation, but with a little bit of extra prep you can take it to that next level. We wanted to have all of the information any traveler would need, all in one place.”

The guide features travel tips, including how to pack and how to navigate the Mazatlán airport, along with gear recommendations, trip reports and other “travel hacks” that contribute to improving visitors’ fishing success and making travel cheaper and more effortless, whenever possible.

“As we took more and more friends down there, we kept getting the same questions,” Pete said. “They wanted to know what lures to bring, what kind of line they’d need, and which guide was the best. We set out to answer all of those questions and more. We’re not sponsored by any particular tackle company so we can tell you what has worked for us and why we recommend it.”

The site is updated with new information nearly weekly. The couple also writes about travel more generally at www.halfpastfirstcast.com, with an emphasis on favorite destinations including Alaska, Panama, Brazil and Guatemala. Hanna often focuses on issues particular to female travelers or would-be travelers.

“Travel to Mexico has been one of the greatest experiences of our lives,” she said. “I can’t imagine going more than a few months without returning to El Salto or Picachos. Every angler owes it to themselves to check it out.”
