Tom Trainer, a multispecies freshwater and saltwater angler loves to fish the ‘Iron’ on ocean trips. In fact, he enjoys angling with just about any artificial lure. During the Tuna season last year Tom Trainer, on the Malibu Fish N Tackle 4 Day charter aboard the Excel found himself about 200 miles south of San Diego, California. The Excel was targeting Yellowfin Tuna when Tom had a brilliant idea.
Recalling the excellent luck he has been having with the SPRO BBZ-1 Rat 50 at his local freshwater lakes, Tom thought to himself why not present this surface lure to the Tuna. So while trolling every time, the boat would experience a Jig Strike and stop, Tom would run up to the bow and start casting the BBZ-1 Rat 50.
Tom described how the other fisherman on-board looked at him like he was insane. Well sure enough, on their third stop of that morning Tom made an excellent cast, and with just one turn of the reel handle, a Yellowfin ate the Rat. The rest is history.
It is remarkable that Tom was not only able to think for himself, despite his boat mates, but he had the presence of mind to bring the Rat with him in the first place. The other lesson here is just because you haven’t seen something before doesn’t mean that it won’t work.
Let’s look at the situation from the Tuna’s perspective. Surface Iron techniques are a proven Tuna catching method. The fish is looking to trap prey items on the ocean’s surface, so during a feeding window and from their point of view is the Rat waking across the surface really that different from any other large artificial surface lure?
No, not at all. So Kudos to Tom for thinking for himself and showing others that Tuna eat Rats, SPRO BBZ-1 Rats!
