Stan Kaplun Targets Sacramento River Trout

Checking in from up north. I got the chance to fish the Sacramento River again, and while I wasn't able to get another Salmon like I did my last time I was here, the Trout kept me occupied this time around.

I caught 20+ trout on a gold Phoebe spoon, with the largest going 2.9 pounds. The majority were small but it was still a blast to catch wild fish in a river, in contrast to the stocked trout that I'm used to catching in San Diego. As they are wild, these fish were extremely healthy, and put up a great fight.

All fish were caught on a Cousins GP 704S, paired with a Shimano Stradic Ci4+ 3000, spooled with 20lb spectra, and a short 8lb fluorocarbon topshot. The lure of choice was a 1/4 oz Phoebe spoon. Because of the shape of the spoon, it has a great flutter action. I let it sink all the way to the bottom, rip the lure hard through the water, and let it flutter back down to the bottom. The bites came on the drop, but also had a few join the party as the lure was coming upward.

Check back in soon for the next report!
