Dear Mr. Jones,
--I tried to send this as a PM but the system didn't seem to let me. There isn't anything in here I mind being put out on the web.
Big Bass Zone is a book I really admired. I wrote one of the editorial reviews on Amazon (still up I think), and it's philosophy has generally shaped my attitude to bass fishing since. I have a Stoeger connection in that they published a book of mine in 2004.
In the wake of them ceasing business is there any talk of someone else updating it or reissuing it?
I'm researching the viability of starting a small publishing company focused on bass fishing and I'd like to try and interest a writer in doing a book with one or other of the SoCal big bass guys. I read your recent post about the record bass so I know you don't hold many of these anglers in high regard, but may I ask if the BBZ book met commercial expectations? It seemed to be very well received.
Do you feel the demand is there for other books exploring trophy bass hunting? Anything you'd do differently?
I come at things from a slightly different viewpoint thanks to emigrating to the US from England about ten years ago. Bass fishing seems to me every bit as technical, dramatic and absorbing as fly fishing but there's just a great hole there when it comes to inspiring and informative bass books. It's been put to me that bass anglers don't read, but perhaps there hasn't been that much quality stuff for them to get into?
I worked for the largest independent publisher of fly fishing titles in the US, so I have some knowledge of the realities of angling publishing, but it's still something I'm excited to take on.
Any insight into your experiences putting the book together would be much appreciated. Are you working on book projects at the moment?
Best wishes,
Craig Buddo
