Hey Bill,

Josh Wray (The Visit Mammoth Guy)

Here is an update on fishing in Mammoth Lakes for the week of April 20th.

Last Friday 4/15 I had the pleasure of fishing with guide Jim Elias with the Troutfitter and Jessica Strickland with Trout Unlimited along with the Mono County Tourism crew Jeff Simpson and Alicia Vennos.

We ran into some high winds at the Upper Owens so opted into fishing Hot Creek instead, which was not a bad trade off. The weather was more timid in the geologic canyon and it didn’t take long for Jim or Jessica to land some beauties.

It was a little early and cold for the fish, but the lighting was perfect and there was even a light snow fall. WD-40s proved to be the pattern of choice with an indicator about 12-18inches off the fly. It was a beautiful day with only one other fishermen on the water.

If you are heading up to Mammoth Lakes for the Mono County Fishing Opener April 30th stop by Hot Creek or the Upper Owens a day or two earlier for some catch and release fishing to get your stoke started before the weekends festivities.

Bill, Here are all the stats on the lakes up in my next of the woods so please pass them on to your readers.

Mammoth Lakes Basin: Twin Lakes is close to full thaw. The Mammoth Lakes Basin road will not be open to Lake Mary, Mamie, George until May 10th.

Mammoth Creek: Flowing heavy. Ready for the opener!

Convict Lake: Completely thawed looking ready for the opener and derby.

Crowley Lake: Ready to go for the opener.

Hot Creek: Flows are at 16cfs This is a Catch & Release, Barbless, Year-Round spot.

Upper Owens: Flows are at 45cfs Spring time run up the river has slowed. Water temperatures are heating up which accelerates weed growth. The weeds make it tough to keep a pattern clean. This is a Catch & Release, Barbless, Year-Round spot.
