Rental Boat Tips; The Fish Do Not Know What You’re Fishing From!

Rental Boat Tips; The Fish Do Not Know What You’re Fishing From!

As an angler, I prefer to hunt, and find my quarry rather than wait for the quest to come to me. So before I found friends with boats or I acquired one for myself, I took the rental boat game to a higher level.

If you want to explore and visit aquatic locations you can’t reach by foot, a rental boat with some additional equipment can provide you with expanded freedom and an opportunity for an excellent day on the water.

A boater doesn’t need ‘fiberglass’ to catch quality bass.

The bass depicted in the rental boat collage above aren’t giants, but they are absolutely quality-sized largies. Take into account that I’m self-photographing/self-holding the subject away from myself and the camera. These bass would be extremely hard to cull from anyone’s live well on any given contemporary Lake Castaic tournament.

A rental boat can provide a great day for you and a friend, and you might land a few bonus catches too.

Rental Boat Tips

The clamp on electric trolling motor, and it’s related equipment, transforms a rental boat into a bass boat.

A clamp on battery powered electric trolling motor should be your first purchase. If you want to do more than troll, drift or sit on the anchor it's a must if you want to hunt for fish from a rental.

You will also need a deep cycle marine grade 12-volt battery to operate the electric trolling motor, and a battery charger when you get home after fishing. I recommend buying two batteries. Two batteries will give you what you need to fish effectively during a long extended day on the water.

Place all the heavy items that you don’t need continuously, like a spare battery, in the bow.

The second battery, when placed in the bow section, provides better boat operation, the weight distribution helps with balancing the boat. When you’re by yourself, this can be substantial. Put everything that isn’t constantly needed forward at the bow.

One of the downsides of a rental boat is slow travel time, it’s hard to run and gun. An extension arm allows you to sit in the middle of the boat instead of in the back near the outboard. When you’re back there next to the transom, the bow rides high, and the boat plows decreasing your speed.

Once you arrive at your fishing location, because the trolling motor is on the transom, in most situations I prefer to fish the boat backward transom first. I set the trolling motor on a very low setting. I stand on the rear bench and tap the handle with my foot to steer. If I need to stop or speed up I move forward and with my hand adjust the course and speed. It’s not that difficult to get a sense of timing and control.

Travel time may be slow but once you get to where you want to fish, the clamp on electric trolling motor allows you to basically fish as effectively as any bass boat.

Boats Are Tools

Fearful of hitting a rock, some bass boat owners are terrified of placing their fiberglass crafts anywhere near the shoreline. This anxiety will prevent them from getting the most from their tools. Casting position is important and can be critical when the bass are using structure and cover elements tight to the shoreline. A rental boat operator shouldn’t be too worried about placing the boat directly next to the shore fishing close and parallel when the conditions call for it.  A rental boat is an excellent way to get over this mental obstacle.

Many worthwhile angling destinations only allow rentals and my rental boat equipment is also very handy when I make trout fishing trips to the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

These tips represent another way an angler can get the most from their day on the water, providing more freedom without the expensive investment of a bass boat.

Remember, the fish don’t know what you’re fishing from when you set the hook!
