If they did know, most likely, they’re aware of your presence. A bass that is aware of your presence is a fish, in most situations, that’s very unlikely to strike your lure.
The ability to conceal your location has never been better thanks to the introduction of the Pure Outboard by Pure Watercraft. This maintenance free, all electric, zero emissions outboard motor provides the stealthiest power plant ever!
Flashing back to a spring day on San Vicente Reservoir my fishing partner Troy Lindner and I were motoring out from a cove. Moving at a moderate steady clip powered by the Pure Outboard, we came upon three large bass, all in the 5 lb. class, high in the water column inches below the surface!
As we approached these three beautiful specimens, they didn’t change their behavior until our boat was already half way past them. Once the bass could see us, that’s when they suddenly bolted away. I could have reached out with a fishing rod and poked them, they were that close. I find this to be very remarkable.
That situation also makes me think of the advantages anglers will have when bass are attacking prey on the surface. The last thing you want to do is spook baitfish and bass with your outboard engine. Watching other boaters approach ‘surface boiling’ bass the most common mistake I see made, is running on the gas outboard too close to the school.
Even with the Pure Outboard, you’ll still need to be stealthy, but you will be quieter than ever, and your odds of success is going to improve.
Pure Watercraft is a Seattle-based tech start-up company on a mission to change how boats are powered. Troy Lindner and I have been field testing the Pure Outboard system while fishing team bass tournaments in the San Diego California region. Our competition is using traditional bass boats with gas combustion outboard engines.
Troy and I have more than proven that Pure Watercraft anglers can be just as effective as anyone in high-level team events. On 3-11-17 Team Pure Watercraft fished their way to a 1st place win, including big bass honors in a field of stout bass anglers!
It should be evident, throughout all boating communities freshwater and salt, that there is a multitude of applications the all-electric Pure Outboard is best suited for. Yes, for the time being, on larger bodies of water, anglers still need contemporary bass boats.
Most of our recreational lakes are relatively small with low-speed limits and often feature a rental boat fleet. Some locations mandate rental boats only, no private boats allowed. The Pure Outboard with its zero emissions, no gas, no oil, and maintenance free operation must sound like a wonderful dream for Fleet Managers.
Water cools the Pure Outboard externally. Unlike a gas combustion marine engine that uses water as an internal coolant, the Pure Outboard can’t harbor invasive species such as Quagga Mussels and their larva within the engine. That makes for one less thing that has to be checked at a lake or state border Quagga Mussel inspection.
That also represents a tremendous advantage for ocean craft, there is no exposure to internal saltwater corrosion.
Team Pure Watercraft is bass fishing from a 16 foot Lund Fury boat. The Pure Engine system primary components are a 40 HP equivalent electric outboard paired with 2 Ion Lithium batteries.
We are reaching speeds up to 25 MPH, effectively covering San Vicente Reservoir, a 1600 surface acre lake located near San Diego California. Our system carries us through a full day of fishing, including live-well and sonar operations. You can plug into any standard 110 convenience outlet for easy overnight recharging.
Smaller cells are already being developed. they'll take up less space, weigh less, and provide greater efficiency. The technology is rapidly advancing.
One has to also factor, no gas, no oil, and zero maintenance purchases during those same years of operation.
- Zero maintenance, 20,000-hour life, for average boater, equals 20 years (average gas outboard rated for 4,000 hours).
- 6kWh high voltage, 350V nominal, lithium ion with high-quality cells (same cell size used by Tesla), thermally managed to result in high cycle life.
- 1500 hour cycle averaging 6 to 10 years of use.
- Minimum system; 1 battery and Pure Engine – 20 hp. equivalent.
- Average system; 2 batteries and Pure Engine – 40 hp. equivalent.
- Approximately $6,000.00 for the Pure Engine.
- Approximately $6,000.00 per battery.
Remember when GM developed the EV1 electric car and the critics said the costs and the range of the vehicle will never be a viable business model? Look at where we are today. Battery operated cars will soon dominate the automotive industry.
As an angler, the suspense of what tomorrow and my next cast will bring is one of my favorite aspects of fishing. Almost every day progressive technology adds to this excitement, and Pure Watercraft has opened a new chapter driven by clean, quiet, high-performance motoring that provides superior enjoyment in the great outdoors.
